Your Photo-rific Guide to Fan Expo Canada 2013

By Ben Mk

If you live in Toronto, the tail end of August usually signals the arrival of one of two annual traditions. For some, it's the CNE. For others, it's Fan Expo Canada. Whether you're into comics, videogames, horror or sci-fi -- or if you just like dressing up in tin foil (just kidding -- but seriously, you're bound to see at least one such costume while you're there) -- Fan Expo Canada 2013 has something for you.

If you're patient enough to brave the long line-ups and the crowds (par for the course for any convention, really), then here's a taste of what's in store for you this year.

Both Microsoft and Sony have a large presence at the show (as usual), and you'll be able to get some valuable one-on-one time with a few upcoming Xbox One and PS3 titles.

However, only Microsoft has their next-gen console on display. The PS4 is nowhere to be seen. Nintendo is also (curiously) M.I.A this year.
Ubisoft also has a strong presence at this year's show, where you can try out Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag or Splinter Cell: Blacklist. No hands-on with Watch_Dogs though. But you do get some face time with this car from the game. Warner Bros. Games is also on-hand, giving attendees a hands-on with Batman: Arkham Origins. And for the kids, Disney Infinity is available to try.

If collectibles are what you're after, head on over to the McFarlane Toys booth, where you can preview their upcoming line of Assassin's Creed IV figures (Series 1 and Series 1.5), as well as Series 4 of their Walking Dead line.

Or if you have more expensive tastes, a company called Triforce has a gold edition full-scale replica of the Locust Hammerburst II (from Gears of War 3) with your name on it. Only $900!! If gold bling isn't your thing, it also comes in the in-game colors.
Or how about these M77 Paladin and M6 Carnifex full-scale replicas from Mass Effect 3? Perhaps a little more practical than a gold plated gun.
Triforce also has intricately-detailed scale statues, based on characters from Gears of War 3, The Last of Us and Max Payne 3. Luckily, they're a little less expensive than the full-scale replicas.
If you're a Star Wars fan (and who isn't?!?!) check out the display of the classy new figures from Hasbro's "Black Series".
Or if you're a Superman fan and a hardcore (stamp) collector, check out the series of commemorative Superman stamps that Canada Post will soon be releasing. These stamps are premiering exclusively at Fan Expo.

For comics, check out the Artist Alley section, where you'll find an awesome array of art and sculptures depicting every possible character imaginable. It's there that you'll find a table for a company called Spawning Pool, where they have on display their ultra-cool statues and maquettes (of characters like Juggernaut, Colossus, Batman and Deadpool).
And you can even take some signed prints home with you (for a price!).

If you're looking to make a quick getaway, why not take K.I.T.T. (from Knight Rider) out for a spin? Actually, I'm pretty sure they'd kill you if you tried to get inside. Someone tell K.I.T.T. that the Hoff is signing autographs around the corner, because I think a Knight Rider reunion is in order.
If you're so inclined, you can even shake hands with a Dalek ... provided you can figure out which one of those two things is his hand.
And where else can you find this Japanese poster for Army of Darkness? At least, I think it's a poster for the movie. Or maybe it's an S-Mart ad for ramen.

Of course, there are also celebrities, workshops and exclusive merchandise to spend your time (and money) on. Look out for the presence of the 501st Legion as well, and bear witness to an attempt at setting a world record for the largest gathering of Daleks. Just remember, cash is king at the expo. You'll save a lot of time if you can avoid paying with plastic. Head on over to the official site for more details. Fan Expo Canada 2013 runs from August 22nd to August 25th.
